Top Urban Nude Beaches: Mar Bella, Zurriola, Haulover
There is a persistent misconception about naturism: that practicing it by the sea requires pulling away from the world, finding an isolated spot, and blending into unspoiled nature far from the hustle and bustle. As if nudity could only exist in secret, hidden away from sight and "real life."
Yet, some of the most iconic naturist beaches in the world joyfully contradict this myth. They are urban beaches, easily accessible by public transport, fully integrated into city life, and proudly out in the open. It was one of these beaches that inspired my latest poster — and this article.
Mar Bella — Barcelona, Spain
Mar Bella is one of Barcelona’s most famous naturist beaches. Nestled in the Poblenou district along the city’s seafront promenade, it is accessible by public transport, lined with beach bars, and frequented by a cosmopolitan, open-minded crowd. This isn't a destination you reach after a long road trip; it’s a beach you head to right after stepping off the metro.
What makes Mar Bella fascinating is precisely how deeply rooted it is in the city. Barcelona embraces this beach as an integral part of its coastline. Here, naturism coexists with daily life without friction or special demands, carrying that Mediterranean casualness where nobody finds it particularly remarkable.
It is this exact message that made me want to illustrate it for the Nus au Soleil collection, rather than choosing a wilder, more remote Spanish beach. Mar Bella says something important about the place of naturism in society.

La Zurriola — San Sebastián, Basque Country
Less known in the naturist world than Mar Bella, La Zurriola is nonetheless a fascinating case. Right in the heart of the Gros neighborhood, between the iconic Kursaal Congress Centre and Mount Ulia, this beach is one of the rare Spanish urban beaches where naturism has been officially tolerated since 2004.
La Zurriola is also a renowned, lively, and trendy surf spot. It embodies something a little different from Mar Bella: a relaxed cohabitation between surfers, swimmers, and naturists in a city famous for its gastronomy and culture. It is hard to imagine a more urban and ordinary context — and that is exactly what makes it remarkable.
San Sebastián simply doesn't make a big deal out of nudity on its beach. And that might just be the most beautiful definition of well-integrated naturism.
Haulover Beach — Miami, Florida
In Miami, Haulover Beach is probably the most striking example of an urban naturist beach in the world. Easily accessible by car from downtown Miami, complete with a large parking lot, restrooms, concessions, and lifeguards, it is a city beach designed for everyone’s comfort, where nudity is simply a legal, regulated, and respected option.
It welcomes over a million visitors every year, making it one of the most popular naturist beaches globally. This number says it all: when the framework is clear and mutual respect is present, urban naturism works — and it draws a crowd.
And what about France?
France is the world's leading naturist destination, with dozens of authorized beaches and famous naturist villages scattered across the country. Yet, looking closely, French naturist beaches are almost all relatively isolated — vast Atlantic stretches in the Landes, wild Mediterranean coves, or areas accessible only after a long walk.
This is certainly part of their charm, reflecting a specific conception of naturism: a return to nature, far from the noise. But it also reflects a different cultural model from that of Barcelona or San Sebastián, where naturism was built in separate spaces rather than integrated into ordinary city life.
Mar Bella, Zurriola, Haulover: these beaches show us that another path is possible. They prove that naturist freedom doesn’t need to hide to exist.
What about you? Do you know of any other urban naturist beaches?
I am convinced there are others out there, in Europe or elsewhere, that I have yet to discover. If you know of any, please share them in the comments — who knows, they might just end up as a poster in the Nus au Soleil collection! 😄🌞
